For Consumers
Understanding what the Certified Microplastic-Free seal means in practice. For an overview of how microplastic certifications work, see our Microplastic Certifications page, and for background on risks, read Why It Matters.
What the seal means for you
The Certified Microplastic-Free seal is designed to make it easier to identify products that are built to reduce microplastic exposure in normal use.
What the seal does mean
- The manufacturer has gone through a documentation-based review of materials and contact surfaces.
- Direct contact surfaces for the certified product meet our criteria for avoiding common microplastic shedding risks.
- The product is subject to ongoing requirements for change notifications and renewal.
What the seal does not promise
- It is not a guarantee that no microplastics will ever be present in or around the product.
- It is not a medical claim and does not replace advice from health professionals.
- It does not certify anything outside the defined scope of the standard for that product type.
How to verify a claim
If you see the Certified Microplastic-Free seal on a product, you can visit this site to learn about the standard and the types of products currently in scope.
A public directory of certified products is planned. Until then, you can contact us at info@microfree.org if you have questions about a specific claim or product.
