The standard

What the seal means

The Certified Microplastic-Free™ seal tells shoppers that a product's exposed surfaces, the parts that touch skin, mouths, food, or beverages, have been reviewed against our published standard, on the basis of the product's bill of materials, supplier documentation, and manufacturing details, and determined to contain no plastics or other microplastic-forming materials.

What certification covers: Certification is a documentation-based review of a product’s exposed-surface materials against CMF Standard v1.0. It is not a laboratory test of the finished product and is not a guarantee that no microplastic particles will ever be present in or around it. See Methods Transparency for what we review and what we do not.

Many brands describe their products as plastic free. Very few can point to independent verification of that claim. Our microplastic-free certification closes that gap with a criteria-based review, a written determination, and a trademark license agreement that governs exactly how the seal may be used.

Scope of review

What we review

  • Materials and composition

A complete bill of materials for every exposed component, evaluated against the published criteria.

  • Supplier documentation

Specifications and attestations from the supply chain that support each material claim.

  • Manufacturing and change control

How the product is made, and how material or supplier changes must be reported to us.

  • Ongoing compliance

Annual renewal confirms that materials, suppliers, and processes remain consistent with certification.
